Types of Therapy and Treatment Options

Drug addictions stem from deeper, darker issues such as low self-esteem, childhood abuse, bullying or mental health disorders. Since no two drug addicts share the same story, it’s important that recovery programs are tailored to fit the individual. With the complexity of drug addiction problems, there are various rehabilitation programs that differ based on type, style and treatment philosophy. For example, The River Source offers residential treatment that combines holistic healing, cognitive therapy, and behavioral modification to successfully treat the mind, body, and spirit of each patient.

Let’s review the various recovery programs and their approaches to treatment.

Types of Rehabilitation Programs

Inpatient – These inpatient drug and alcohol treatment programs are the most involved and include 28-day or longer stays where the addict undergoes intense therapy and rehabilitation. Many of these programs are voluntary, but some are mandated by the court. During this time, patients go through detoxification, attend individual and group therapy and learn to adopt healthy behaviors, such as by having a strict schedule and using coping mechanisms.

Outpatient – This type of therapy allows the addict to continue living their normal lives, attending work or school, and tending to family obligations. However, patients go to the rehabilitation center regularly for treatment. They may need to check in daily, weekly, or monthly depending on their needs, the severity of their addiction, and the length they’ve been in treatment. Many patients, in fact, require both inpatient and outpatient care to overcome their addiction.

Halfway Houses – These homes are exactly as they sound; they are a branch between the patient’s home and residential care. Basically, halfway homes are sober living homes where everyone is sober but are able to leave to go to work or school and attend extracurricular activities. Halfway homes are ideal for those learning to integrate back into the world while having a supportive network at home.

Community Programs – Programs in the community include AA meetings and drop-in centers. They are available throughout the community in an effort to provide support and bring recovering addicts together.

Types of Treatment Approaches

Behavioral Modification – This type of treatment focuses on controlling behavior. At The River Source, we work on behavior modification by arranging strict schedules, creating a structured environment, and learning how to control cravings.

Cognitive Therapy – This therapy focuses on the mind instead of behavior. During cognitive therapy, negative thoughts and emotions are replaced with positive ones. At our facility, we teach our patients how to deal with negative stress and problems without the need for drugs.

Holistic Treatment – Holistic treatment focuses on the whole individual instead of just one component. Patients can enjoy a variety of activities that are consistent with a healthy lifestyle such as art, music, or meditation. Holistic treatment is the backbone of The River Source’s program, as we treat the mind, body, and spirit of our patients for a well-rounded, comprehensive approach toward treatment.

What Makes a Drug Rehabilitation Program Successful?

While each drug rehabilitation program is unique, there are certain factors that make a program successful. Nothing is more important than choosing the right drug addiction treatment program since we often have a “one-shot” to get it right. If a patient relapses immediately after treatment, they may never want to return.

Residential or inpatient treatment is the most effective form of treatment. For serious addicts, it’s best to be removed from the current environment so that they can heal mentally, physically, and spiritually while following a rigid schedule. All patients must start a residential program after being detoxed. The River Source offers naturopathic detoxification at our facility for maximum success and convenience.

Second, there should be a variety of treatment therapies offered, and they should all integrate with each other. For example, behavioral modification can include building a healthy schedule while cognitive therapy includes dealing with negative emotions. Group therapy provides support and understanding, while individual and family counseling addresses past experiences, relationships with family, and underlying reasons for drug abuse.

Finally, it’s not just what happens during treatment but after. The River Source creates a strong aftercare plan for each resident. There will be meetings for the recovering addict to attend, advice on sticking to a regimented schedule and ongoing support. We offer a recovery guaranteed to show our confidence in our program. If you attend our residential program for three months or complete our full continuum of care and relapse within one year, you can enroll in an appropriate recovery program at no charge. The only cost to the patient is transportation. Having this guarantee is added peace of mind that we have a program that really works.
