It’s National Recovery Month, and this year’s theme is Join the Voices for Recovery: Speak Up, Reach Out. Many events are held throughout the country to celebrate National Recovery Month, and one of the most exciting is the Art of Recovery Expo. The expo is FREE, open to the public and offers afull dayy of educational resources, workshops and solutions. The River Source will be there, and we look forward to reaching out to the families and loved ones seeking recovery. We know this is a difficult time and that these families need education, support and understanding. Background of the Event
Back in 2004, the Brown family created an event that would bring leading providers of addiction treatment together to meet with the community. The Browns believed that addiction was a treatable disease but knew that finding where to go for help was challenging. Bringing some of the finest leaders of treatment together under one roof would give families and individuals the necessary support, education and information needed to seek recovery.
Since this point in time, the public event has grown into an entire expo with professionals that are knowledgeable, supportive and understanding. The atmosphere is positive, with zero judgment or pressure. After all, addiction is a chronic illness and public health problem that impacts us all in some way. The disease knows no bounds and can grab a hold of anyone of any race, age, socioeconomic status, gender, background or location.
What to Expect
The Art of Recovery Expo is FREE and open to the public. It’s a positive and informative environment where anyone interested in learning about addiction and recovery is welcome. Workshops are held throughout the day, and this year’s keynote speaker is Tara Conner. Conner is a television personality and was crowned Miss USA in 2006. In the same year, Conner completed 30 days of treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. She now celebrates 6 years of sobriety and plans to share her story at the expo.
In addition to the keynote speaker and workshops, there will be dozens of booths set up where families can find education and support. Education is available for all ages, even kids. Addiction affects the entire family unit, and it’s important to give attention to even the smallest members in the family in order for the cycle to be broken.
