Treating the Root of Addiction

Addiction can come from a wide variety of sources, and many clients at The River Source can’t point to a single origin. Our counselors will help you determine why you fell victim to substance abuse in the first place.

When you address the stressors and triggers that have caused you to cope using substances in the past, you’re exploring the root cause of your addiction. Together, you and your counselor will construct positive coping skills so that you can learn how to maintain lifelong sobriety, even if you’re faced with those addiction triggers in the future.

Fostering Emotional Growth

When you suffer from addiction to drugs or alcohol, it’s not uncommon to experience feelings associated with anxiety, shame, hopelessness, and depression. You’re not alone.

As a co-occurring rehab center in Arizona, our counselors are experienced in helping clients address their anxiety and depression. At The River Source, your counselor can help provide you with individualized guidance and psychological help, as well as help you develop life skills to mitigate and manage these negative feelings in the future.

Group Therapy

Addiction can be isolating, but it’s important to remember that addiction can happen to anyone. Group counseling at The River Source reinforces that you’re not alone. During group therapy, you’re surrounded by individuals who are facing many of the same challenges you are.

Sometimes it’s hard to listen to the advice of someone who has never battled addiction. In group therapy, there are members in all stages of recovery, offering unique perspectives and solutions to problems that you may be facing. In fact, many of our counselors are recovering addicts themselves and can offer personal experience.

All of our group counseling sessions take place in comfortable, intimate settings where you can focus on recovery with a small, non-judgmental group. While fewer meetings may be needed over time, group counseling is beneficial throughout all stages of addiction treatment, from your first days in substance abuse detox to your last days in our outpatient treatment program.

Family Counseling & Therapy

Addiction rarely affects only one person — it’s a family disease, and it needs solutions that meet the needs of everyone involved. We provide this by encouraging your loved ones to participate in family counseling and educational sessions.

Led by our licensed team of behavioral health specialists, our family therapists are committed to learning about the unique situations of each of our clients and their families. We get to know our clients on a deep level during individual therapy and give clients an opportunity to interact with their loved ones during family counseling.

At The River Source, we spend time observing relationship issues and work together to develop more positive communication standards for everyone in the family. Family counseling is not about placing blame, passing judgement, or making excuses for the past – it’s about being the one who steps up to make amends, accepting your loved ones for who they are, and focusing on how to make future relationships better.

Safe, Supportive Counseling

During family counseling, you and your family will have the chance to discuss addiction in a safe, neutral setting. Your counselor will guide your loved ones toward meaningful discussions that will help you constructively work through issues relating to your condition and the way it affects your relationships.

As a family, you’ll develop healthy coping skills, a strong inner support network, a healthy communication system, and much more. If you’re the client, family counseling is about taking ownership and making amends. If you’re a loved one, we will stress the importance of understanding and acceptance. At The River Source, we accommodate families so that they can be as involved in their loved one’s recovery process as they want.

Family Addiction Education

Drug and alcohol addiction is often difficult to understand. It may be complex, but during our family education sessions held every Saturday and Tuesday, we break down addiction into digestible, understandable pieces.

During our two-hour family education sessions, we teach families various skills and provide them with helpful resources on battling addiction. Some of the topics we cover include how to recognize relapse signs, establish healthy boundaries and communication, where to find self-help, how to hold your loved one accountable, and more.

Group therapy and self-help programs are highly impactful for those recovering from substance abuse problems. These strategies are even more beneficial when they are combined with individual therapy. Individual therapy involves working one-on-one with a counselor who understands the unique issues that people face when dealing with a drug or alcohol problem. Counselors can reinforce what’s learned in group therapy, but they can also tackle issues that can’t be dealt with in a group setting.

Why Individual Therapy Is Important

Individual therapy has a lot of rewards that are a natural result of a trusted, one-on-one relationship. It’s important for you to trust the counselor so that you can open up and feel comfortable exploring your feelings.

Let’s point out a few benefits to taking part in individual counseling at a drug rehab Arizona.

How Individual Therapy Helps

Patients who take part in individual therapy during treatment find that they feel better about themselves and their recoveries. There’s something liberating about talking out your problems, letting your feelings come to the surface and freeing yourself from your past burdens. But individual counseling is not just for talking. Counselors also teach a variety of important life skills and coping mechanisms that will help you manage stress in your life.

Factoring In Group Therapy

Individual therapy builds on group therapy, and vice versa. They should not be looked at as separate treatments. When you meet individually with a counselor, you can work through your internal struggles, while group therapy helps you identify with others and feel less isolated in your problems.

Benefits of group therapy for addiction include:

Many times, what people learn in group therapy will be talked about in individual therapy. This creates well-rounded discussions that involve many perspectives, which is important for long-term recovery.
